Artist & Empire is an exhibition that explores the relationship between colonial art and contemporary art in former British colonies. The editorial uses two typographic systems to express the narrative of the exhibition.
Old Vs New
We looked into books during the colonial era and extracted what made them quintessentially British. We used Caslon as it was period-specific and conveyed a regal aesthetic which worked with the single-column grid system.
For the layout of the contemporary artworks, we used a Gill Sans as the modern contemporary to Caslon. This is paired this with a multi-column layout that had a loose adherence to the grid.
